    inspiration

_Inspired by the tradition of 'making do', Australian Wagga Rugs and my Great Grandmother's sock blanket (images above); and with a strong desire to create beautifully handcrafted pieces by reusing existing materials, bidihomewares was born, launching on September 1st, 2001.

On a day to day basis the patterns, colours and textures surrounding us inspire bidi designs - the bush, the water, the sky. The juxtaposition of rough and smooth, light and dark, busy and calm - they are reflected in the fabrics used for each bidi piece and are a basis for the design process.

Hector - the first bidi (with soft toy collection)

    Picture
Hector was the first bidi blanket. Created between 1999 and 2000 he contains patches of various woollen garments such as jumpers and tartan skirts, as well as a fox fur jacket. The black stripes were cut from cotton velveteen.

Hector's rectangular patches remain the template for all bidi blankets and cushions.

bidi can accommodate any additional ideas you may have, in order to create your own, unique item. Commissions are very welcome. See the special memories page for more information.
